  4.     With the real estate market slumping, some homeowners think
  5. it takes a miracle to sell a house these days. Not just any
  6. broker can perform one, so many sellers are turning to an
  7. expert: St. Joseph. Religious-goods merchants in several cities
  8. have been surprised at the brisk sales of St. Joseph statues,
  9. which homeowners bury in their yards in the belief the saint
  10. will drum up some business. The hopeful sellers inter the
  11. statues headfirst, with the feet toward heaven.

  13.     Believers have sought the saint's help in household matters
  14. for centuries. St. Joseph, a carpenter, was handy around the
  15. house, after all. The Catholic Church has no objection to such
  16. appeals for intercession, but brokers, complained Father James
  17. Coen, head of the Catholic Information Center, to the New York
  18. Daily News, "are turning this into a first-class sales gimmick."
  19. Successful sellers are advised to exhume the statue and enshrine
  20. it in their new home. Co-op owners who have no yards may have
  21. to pray to someone else: St. Jude, patron of lost causes.
